H. Rubin Vision Center History
H. Rubin Vision Centers prides itself on having a clear vision from the beginning. Enjoying a long, proud history of achievement, innovation and patient satisfaction, H. Rubin Vision Centers, formerly Whaley Opticians, continues to set the standards for vision care of the future.

Since it’s beginning in 1941, Whaley Opticians continues as the oldest independent optical establishment in South Carolina. The previous owner, Marion Whaley, was one of the two guild opticians practicing in Columbia, SC.

Harvey Rubin, a successful optician in Midland Park, New Jersey from 1967 to 1977, relocated to Columbia, SC and purchased the two Whaley Opticians locations in August 1977. An innovative business decision was made when a third location was added at the new Columbia Mall in August 1977. The first H. Rubin Vision Center at Bush River Road was opened in April 1978. Locations were also established in Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Since that time, there have been various organizational structures in place. Most recently, optometrists have purchased all of the South Carolina locations. Now that your local H. Rubin Vision Center is a “doctor owned” practice, the company will continue to be successful by implementing the latest in optical technology and offering the consumer superior healthcare, a large variety of eyewear products and a good value for their eye care dollar.

The vision center locations continue to prosper by consistently offering each patient the highest levels of services and products with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, and has been repeatedly named “The Best” in vision services and products.

Overall, 2004 proved to be a very exciting year for H. Rubin as it opened its LASIK surgery suite in September. For three years, H. Rubin had been providing laser surgery procedures performed by an independently contracted ophthalmologist with rented surgical facilities. In order to provide the most comprehensive vision correction experience, H. Rubin purchased a VISX surgical laser and expanded the Garners Ferry location to house the new surgery center. H. Rubin provides laser vision consultations in two locations and provides pre and post-operative optometric care to laser vision candidates.

In an effort to continue to provide the latest in eyewear fashion and technology, H. Rubin will always introduce new lens designs, as well as designer frames such as Esquire, Kate Spade, Silhouette, Jones of New York, and Nine West. Moving forward, H. Rubin will continue to offer the best in quality, comprehensive eye care at an affordable price. The future looks brighter with H. Rubin.
